From the Pages to the Shadows: What's Happening at Distorted Light Studio

 

Distorted Light Studio has never been about staying within one particular medium. Whether it's writing horror stories, creating disturbing artwork, designing merchandise, or developing new projects, the idea has always been the same: create something different and see where it leads.

Over the past several months, a number of those ideas have become finished products. Three are now available through Lulu, additional designs are available through Midnight Supply Company, and another project is currently in development.

Rather than following one particular type of horror, each story stands on its own, offering a different experience.

DARKNESS BETWEEN THE LINES: AN ADULT HORROR COLORING BOOK

Horror doesn't always have to be something you read or watch. Sometimes, you can become part of the creative process.

Darkness Between the Lines is an adult horror coloring book featuring 40 original illustrations.

The artwork explores creatures, unsettling figures, dark imagery, and other subjects drawn from the more disturbing side of imagination.

Each illustration is printed on its own page, with a blank reverse side, allowing readers to approach the artwork however they choose.

There are no rules for how these images should look when finished. That's entirely up to the person holding the pencils, markers, or whatever else they decide to use.

The latest addition to the Distorted Light Studio collection takes horror into a different direction.

TEHOM — MORPHAI ABYSSOU: The Deep — Forms of the Abyss is a 2027 art calendar built around the concept of an ancient illustrated document containing records of strange beings and impossible forms.

Each month features a different illustrated plate, presented with the atmosphere of a recovered artifact or forgotten bestiary.

The artwork combines disturbing creatures, mysterious environments, and an aged visual presentation designed to make the calendar feel like something discovered rather than something recently created.

Twelve months. Twelve illustrated encounters with the unknown.

It's a calendar, but it's also a yearlong collection of dark artwork.

Not everything coming out of Distorted Light Studio belongs on a bookshelf.

Midnight Supply Company is where my artwork and ideas move into apparel and other merchandise.

The store features designs ranging from horror-inspired imagery and the darker creations of ABOMINARIUM to music-related artwork, original graphics, and designs that don't necessarily fit into any particular category.

Some designs are disturbing. Others are strange, humorous, or simply something I felt like creating.

COMING SOON: NOCTERUM MORTERIS — THE NIGHT OF MORTAL THINGS

An original horror tarot deck

Another project currently in development is NOCTERUM MORTERIS: The Night of Mortal Things.

This is a complete 78-card tarot deck, built around traditional tarot structure but reimagined through the visual world of gothic horror, mortality, symbolism, and dark illustration.

The deck features the 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana, with an original visual identity combining aged ivory, distressed black, deep crimson, and elaborate gothic detailing.

The artwork and symbolism have been developed as a cohesive collection rather than a series of unrelated images.

The deck is being prepared for production through The Game Crafter, with packaging and presentation receiving the same attention as the cards themselves.

NOCTERUM MORTERIS is not available for purchase yet. More information will be shared as the project moves closer to release.

MORE THAN ONE WAY TO CREATE

Distorted Light Studio was never intended to be limited to books, illustrations, or any single category.

One idea might become a short story. Another might become a piece of artwork, a shirt, a calendar, or an entirely different kind of project.

I don't particularly care about fitting everything into one genre or following a particular trend. I create what interests me, experiment with different approaches, and move on to whatever idea comes next.

Some projects take weeks. Others take months. And some develop into something completely different from what I originally imagined.

That's part of the process.

When Your Stories Find Another Voice

There’s something strange—in a good way—about hearing a story you wrote coming out of someone else’s speakers.

Two of my horror stories have now been adapted by other creators, each in a completely different format.

The Previous Tenant Left Me a List of Rules was recently narrated by Stefan Jenkins on YouTube. Stefan contacted me beforehand and asked permission to narrate the story, which I was happy to give him.

He didn’t just read it, either. At the end of the narration, he gives his own commentary and thoughts about the story and the writing. Hearing somebody else interpret the atmosphere, pacing, and events is a very different experience from reading your own words on a screen.

Then there’s The Replacement, which was featured on The Make Me Believe Podcast as part of their episode “50. The Imposters.” The episode features two unsettling stories built around people who aren't quite what they seem.

I originally wrote these stories simply because I wanted to tell horror stories. Seeing people read them was already the goal. Having other creators decide that one of those stories is worth narrating, discussing, or bringing to their own audience is something I didn't expect.

And that's probably the coolest part.

Once a story leaves your hands, readers create their own version of it in their heads. A narration takes that another step. Suddenly the characters have voices. The pauses happen somewhere you might not have expected. Certain lines hit differently. Something that existed as words becomes a performance.

TWO WAYS INTO THE DARK

A short time ago, these were just ideas.

Now there are two books sitting under the Distorted Light Studio name, and although they’re very different books, they came from the same place.

THE HOUSE OF BROKEN SLEEP: COLLECTED NIGHTMARES is the storytelling side.

It’s a collection of 17 horror stories built around strange places, unsettling encounters, things that shouldn’t be there, and the feeling that something is wrong long before you understand what it is.

Some of the stories are supernatural. Some lean into psychological horror. Others take ordinary situations and push them just far enough into the dark that they stop feeling ordinary.

Then there’s DARKNESS BETWEEN THE LINES: ADULT HORROR COLORING BOOK.

Instead of telling you the nightmare, this one gives you the imagery and lets you decide what to do with it.

Inside are 40 detailed black-and-white horror illustrations featuring ruined places, twisted figures, unnatural creatures, gothic environments, and other things that probably shouldn’t be waiting for you between the pages.

The artwork is printed single-sided so each illustration has its own page and can be approached however you want. Color it traditionally, make it ugly, make it beautiful, make it disturbing, or leave half of it in darkness.

That’s part of what I like about having these two books together.

One asks you to imagine the darkness.

The other asks you to put your own colors into it.

They weren’t originally planned as companion books. They simply grew out of the same creative space, and somewhere along the way I realized they belonged beside each other.

The Previous Tenant Left Me a List of Rules

Sometimes a story takes on a life of its own.

I recently wrote a short horror story called “The Previous Tenant Left Me a List of Rules” and posted it to Reddit. The premise is simple: someone moves into apartment 3B and discovers that the previous tenant left behind a list of rules.

The problem isn't finding the list.

It's discovering why those rules exist.

I originally posted the story simply because I wanted to write another piece of horror and see what happened. I wasn't expecting much beyond a few readers. Instead, the story started spreading through r/horrorstories and eventually became my #1 Reddit post of all time, reaching more than nearly 20K views and being shared dozens of times.

That part still amazes me.

Numbers aren't really why I write these stories, but knowing that thousands of complete strangers encountered something I created is pretty damn cool. What started as another creepy idea became one of my most-read pieces on Reddit.

Night Static is an independent horror music project blending dark ambient, cinematic tension, industrial textures, and heavy dubstep into instrumental soundscapes that feel more like nightmares than songs. Every release is built around atmosphere first, creating stories without lyrics and letting the listener imagine what waits beyond the next sound.

Rather than chasing trends or festival anthems, Night Static explores abandoned places, forgotten rituals, haunted broadcasts, cursed folklore, and psychological horror. Each album is its own world, with original artwork and a visual identity designed to match the music.

Recent releases such as Needle of the Damned continue that vision, while upcoming projects like The Accused and Harrow expand it even further with themes inspired by witch trials, forgotten legends, and the darkness hiding behind history.

Everything is created independently—from the music and artwork to the promotional material and visual concepts. There is no label directing the sound, no committee deciding the themes, and no formula to follow. Every release exists because it tells a story worth hearing.

My AI Creative Workflow

People often ask how I create so much artwork and music. The truth is that I don't rely on a single AI. I treat each one like a different tool in a studio, each with its own strengths.

ChatGPT — The Creative Brain

Everything usually starts here.

ChatGPT is where I develop concepts, build album themes, create track lists, write song descriptions, brainstorm horror stories, design promotional ideas, and refine the overall vision. It's also where many of my album cover concepts begin before moving into image generation.

Rather than asking AI to create something random, I build an idea until it feels complete.

Suno — The Music Studio

Once the concept is solid, I move to Suno.

Suno is where the music comes to life. I use detailed prompts to create horror soundscapes, dark ambient pieces, aggressive dubstep, bluegrass-inspired horror, cinematic instrumentals, and experimental electronic music.

The better the prompt, the better the result.

Grok & Meta AI — Motion

Still images are powerful, but movement brings them to life.

For short promotional clips, teasers, and social media videos, I experiment with Grok and Meta AI. Sometimes one produces a better animation than the other, so I use whichever fits the project.

Like every creative tool, they're not perfect—but when everything comes together, the results can be surprisingly cinematic.

Gemini & Copilot — Fresh Perspectives

Sometimes the best way to improve an idea is to see it through another lens.

I'll occasionally ask Gemini or Copilot the same question I asked ChatGPT. Not because I'm looking for a "better" answer, but because each AI approaches creativity differently.

A single suggestion from another model can spark an entirely new direction.

No AI creates my projects for me.

I make the decisions. I choose the concepts. I reject ideas that don't fit. I rewrite prompts, remix styles, and sometimes start over completely.

AI has become my creative toolbox—not my replacement.
